After cancerous tissue is removed from the oral cavity, a defect is created. It can be a defect of the lip, the cheek, the palate (roof of the mouth), or the floor of the mouth. It can also involve multiple areas of the oral cavity. This defect can vary in size and location, depending on the extent of cancer and the type of surgery used to remove it.
If you have had surgery to remove cancer from your oral cavity and have a defect that needs to be reconstructed, you can opt for reconstructive surgery for oral cancer at Recon Plastic Surgery Centre, Hubli.
Reconstructive surgery for oral cancer refers to the surgical repair of a defect created by the removal of cancerous tissue from the mouth. This type of surgery is complex and requires a three-dimensional (3D) vision of the defect in order to create a successful reconstruction. Only an experienced plastic surgeon can properly assess and execute the reconstruction of defects.
The most common technique for the reconstruction of defects resulting from surgical excision of a cancerous lesion in the oral cavity is the use of flap surgery. A flap is a type of tissue that is transferred from one side (donor site) to another (recipient site) while maintaining its own blood supply.
There are mainly three different types of reconstruction options using flap tissue. These are:
Local flaps: Local flaps are a type of reconstruction in which tissue needed to repair a defect is derived from a nearby area. The procedure is known as “local” because the surgeon uses tissue from the local area surrounding a defect to close it. These flaps can be obtained from either skin or mucosal tissue. There are many local flaps depending on the method they’re produced and the origin location. But local flaps are often utilized in the reconstruction of minor defects of the head and neck area.
Regional flaps: Regional flaps are a type of reconstruction in which tissue is obtained from a region somewhat farther away from the immediately neighboring tissue surrounding the defect. These flaps can be derived from the neck or chest. Again, there are several types of regional flaps that are classified differently and serve various goals.
Free flaps: Free flaps are a type of reconstruction in which tissue is derived from another area of the body and moved to cover the defect. This is a complex procedure that follows the same principles as a transplant, in which living tissue is removed and transplanted to another location with a new blood supply. Free flaps are usually taken from the thigh, forearm, or leg. They are used to repair complex defects that involve significant tissue loss in order to improve form and function. The advantage of this type of reconstruction is that it gives surgeons more options for choosing tissue that most closely matches the site of repair in the oral cavity.
The best candidates for free flap surgery are those who require reconstruction following major cancer surgery. Free flaps, for example, can be used in the case of reconstructing jaw and face defects caused by tumors.
Free flap surgery is a complex procedure that should only be performed by a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon. To know if you are a candidate for free flap surgery, please consult Dr. Arun Jeedi .
Book AppointmentDuring the consultation, Dr. Arun Jeedi will assess the patient’s condition, go through medical history, and also discuss their goals and expectations for the surgery to suggest the type of reconstruction that is best for them.
When a patient visits the Recon Plastic Surgery Centre for a consultation, Dr. Arun Jeedi guides them through every aspect of the procedure in order to provide an outstanding final result. A discussion may be vital before surgery because the patient can examine his or her level of comfort with the doctor and grasp all of the factors involved in the surgery.
Free flap surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. The first step of the surgery is to harvest the tissue from the donor site. This tissue will be used to cover the defect. The next step is to create a tunnel under the skin to reach the recipient site. Then, Dr. Arun Jeedi will reconnect the blood vessels of the flap to the blood vessels at the site of the defect. Once the flap is in place, Dr. Arun will close the incisions.
After free flap surgery, patients will need to stay in the hospital for a week (or more) so that Dr. Arun Jeedi can monitor their progress and make sure that the flap is getting enough blood flow. Once Dr. Arun is satisfied with the patient’s progress, he or she will be able to go home and continue recovering. The recovery time may vary from patient to patient. It is important to follow Dr. Arun ’s post-operative instructions during recovery to ensure optimal results. Some patients may also be recommended for additional physical therapy to enhance results.
During the patient’s OPD consultation, Dr. Arun Jeedi will estimate the cost of free flap surgery based on the evaluation of the patient’s unique case, knowledge of his or her goals and expectations, and discussion of both advantages and drawbacks of the surgery.
Book AppointmentFree flap surgery is a highly effective microsurgical procedure that can help patients treat complex defects that involve a significant loss of tissue. The main benefits of free flap surgery are that it can be used to improve the appearance and restore functions such as speech and swallowing.
As with any surgery, there are certain risks associated with free flap surgery. Infection is a common complication and can be controlled with antibiotics. Other complications include numbness around the donor site and flap failure. However, these risks are rare and Dr. Arun Jeedi will take all precautions to avoid them.
